In a continuation of the Fantasy Map-Making class, learn more advanced techniques in map-making while collaboratively building a storyline for a fantasy world. Drawn, relief, and printed maps will be explored with more complexity, and new methods, including digital maps, will be introduced.
This class also includes an array of writing prompts to guide your learner’s crafting of story and connect their ideas to their maps. The class will finish with a group project featuring a collection of maps and stories based on a world we create together, and all students will be sent a physical copy of this project along with book-binding materials and instructions (cost of class includes kit). This is a deeply collaborative and tactile class that uses imagination, creativity, and critical thinking!
Note: Fantasy Map-Making is a prerequisite to this class!
This is a 6-week class from 10/11-11/15 on Mondays 1-2pm (Mountain).
Usually 2-3 hours per week of work, including class, to either finish maps started in class or work on the group project.
This class introduces more advanced techniques in map-making as well as a collaborative group project that merges fantasy map-making and storytelling.
Note that this class is NOT the same as Adventures in Fantasy, where the focus is on individual novels. This class ends with a collaborative book of stories and maps. The book-binding kit contains a printed version and all the materials needed, and is sent directly to students at the end of the course.
This workshop has an age limit of 9 and up based on the development of fine motor skills and the use of sharp tools. Students who are younger than 9 may be able to take the class with modifications or adult supervision.
Families and learners are welcome to share any information about their individual learning preferences and needs and instructor will make accommodations that are helpful to the class.
A materials list will be posted in the Teachable classroom. Most materials will be carried over from Fantasy Map-Making, with just a few additions.
Live sessions will be best experienced with a camera and microphone. Parents will need a Zoom account (free). Students can also get a free Discord account for access to a class-specific channel.

This was an awesome class — Sam (the instructor) really engaged the kids, inspiring them and supporting their interests (and quirks!). There was quite a bit of material covered in the four sessions, with a great balance of demonstration, discussion, and tasks to complete on their own. Sam was also available for answering questions between sessions and posted the material (including video recording), which was very helpful. Our son loved this class and really looked forward to it every week. All the best!

Thank you! Thank you! Your fantasy map making class was fantastic. What my kids enjoyed is that it was in-depth, messy, and tactile. It was not elementary or overly cautious. It utilized real art materials and challenged them to think creatively and concretely about their ideas.
Your high school research class was informative, clear, and concise. Maya is now utilizing the tools she learned from you in her high school and college classes. I’m going to look for any class you are teaching in the future; and I’m going to recommend you to my friend circle. I’m so glad we found SEA online. If you teach on any other platform, I’d love to know.
Thanks again for great classes!
